Banfi Vintners

Wine Is ...

Wine can be sophisticated without being snobby. It can be diverse without becoming muddled in complexities…and it can be genuinely authentic in a way soft drinks can only touch with a snazzy marketing campaign.

This is a product of the earth, not the lab. It is subject to the vagaries of Mother Nature and the whim of fate. Each vintage is slightly different. Each bottling tells its own story…and what stories there are to tell!

“Through the ages, no other beverage has had such universal acceptance as wine. One reason for this is its sheer naturalness—the juice from a handful of crushed grapes in action with the wild yeasts on the bloom of their skins will turn to wine if allowed to remain in the cup.”

Wine is an ancient beverage, one steeped in lore, legend, rite and ritual. It was first crafted thousands of years before the birth of Jesus Christ and remains, to this day, a beverage that is both sacred and profane.

The grape most likely made its historic leap to immortality quite by accident. In all probability, a bowl of crushed grapes was set someplace warm and inadvertently forgotten. Within this vessel was all that was needed to start the fermentation process: sugars (in the juice), yeast (present on the grape skins)…and a little time for the two to mix and mingle.

“Wine was born, not invented…like an old friend, it continues to surprise us in new and unexpected ways.”
Dr. Salvatore P. Lucia, American physician and writer (1901-1984)
