Placido, one of America’s leading Italian wine imports, is putting a new spin on its packaging with screw cap closures and redesigned labels.
Placido wines are known for their sophisticated traditional image and approachable fruit-forward style. The varietals are crafted to be enjoyed while young and fresh and capture each varietal’s unique character. Screw caps help to preserve these characteristics. All Placido and Placido Primavera varietals will be bottled with screw caps. Placido Chianti, however, in deference to Italian D.O.C.G. regulations will retain the natural cork closure.
The new package design for the Placido varietals replaces the formal Renaissance portrait of Conte Placido with a more contemporary water-color version and the parchment background of the label with a monogrammed vellum look. Both changes maintain the Tuscan character of the brand but add a more casual elegance. Placido Primavera labels will remain unchanged. The new packaging will appear in wine shops and restaurants this April with the 2005 vintage.
“The screw caps and new label design underscore Placido’s blend of innovation and tradition,” said James Mariani family proprietor of Banfi Vintners, the importer of Placido. “These are modern classics that are proud of their Tuscan winemaking heritage.”
The brand inherited its name from a famous Sienese family, the Placidi, on whose vast estate some of the Placido vines grow today. The land was awarded to the family back in the Middle Ages and remained in the possession of its descendants until modern times.
The Placido line includes a 100% varietal Pinot Grigio, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chardonnay as well as the traditional style Chianti. The Placido Primavera collection comprises three old world favorites: Trebbiano, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, and Sangiovese.
The Placido wines are available in 750ml and 1.5L bottles and retail for $9.00 and $14.00, respectively. Placido Chianti is also available, in limited distribution, in a 5L bottle for $60.00. Placido Primavera is available exclusively in 1.5L bottles and retail for $11.00.
Placido wines are imported exclusively by Banfi Vintners, Old Brookville, New York.
