Fifty unmarked glasses of Cabernet Sauvignon and a little bit of luck are all that lay between Harvey J. Smith and $1 million. All he has to do is figure out which one of those fifty is Walnut Crest Cabernet Sauvignon.
Mr. Smith, of Lakewood, N.Y., was randomly picked from over 100,000 people who vied to take the Walnut Crest $1,000,000 Taste Challenge on April 30th at the Marriott Marquis in New York's famed Times Square.
The producers of Walnut Crest are challenging Mr. Smith that their Cabernet Sauvignon, which retails for about $6 for a 750ml bottle, is so good that he can't pick it out from 49 other wines that are up to four times more expensive.
Mr. Smith has no formal wine training - he simply enjoys an occasional glass of wine. A veteran of the Korean War, he spends his retired years doing computer research on topics of interest, going out with friends and entering contests such as Walnut Crest's Taste Challenge II. When asked how he intends to prepare his palate for the million-dollar challenge, Mr. Smith replied, "I guess I'll need to become a wine expert -- very quickly."
Mr. Smith may be well advised to sample a broad range of Cabernet Sauvignons and compare them to Walnut Crest in preparation of the event, but nationally respected food and wine educator Sharron McCarthy, a winery spokesperson, confirmed that the challenge is impressive. "It's a difficult task to tell Walnut Crest Cabernet apart from other, more expensive brands," said Ms. McCarthy. "This wine's quality is well beyond its price point."
Details on this and future Walnut Crest wine challenges can be found on the brand's website, www.walnutcrest.com, as well as in retail stores that carry Walnut Crest.
