"This wine label is relatively new, an offshoot of Chianti producer Cecchi's venture into the world of Morellino di Scansano, a red wine made from the Sangiovese grape in the coastal Maremma region of southern Tuscany. Val delle Rose's Morellino is bright and forward, having been produced in a more modern style than the Cecchi Chiantis, and it's a steal for $15 or less."

"Chianti gets all the attention when it comes to affordable wines from Tuscany. But for my money, the Sangiovese-based wines from Scansano, located in the warmer coastal part of southern Tuscany known as the Maremma, are as good if not better in some vintages than their regional cohort. This version has lots of juicy, smoke-tinged berry flavors and a pleasing softness that work well with roast chicken or tomato-sauced pastas. The 2004 vintage may already be in some stores."
