Aqua Vitae

"The crystalline/silvery appearance shows inconsequential sediment beneath the examination lamp as many fine grappas/aqua vitas do from Italy; the assertive aroma leaps from the glass in waves of fruity sweet ripe grapes, pears and bubble gum – with time in the glass, the ripe grapy fruit component settles down, moving to the background, leaving the softly sweet scent of confectioner’s sugar and tropical fruit – a seductive bouquet that ends on a dry note of lead pencil, fruit stone, and slate; the palate entry is sweet, fresh, and intensely grapy – at midpalate, the fresh, almost raw grapiness turns more mellow and polished, offering multilayered flavors of dried red fruit, nickel, grape must, and orange zest; finishes as amiably as it begins."  Highly Recommended   * * * *

“If you've ever been tempted by a Grappa aficionado to taste a fine Grappa but declined for fear of the heat, or alcohol burn, on the palate, you might want to try the Castello Banfi Aqua Vitae, a smooth, clear distillate that has all of the pretty nuances that are found in fine Grappas without any of the rough edges. The Banfi Aqua Vitae is distilled from whole Moscato grapes, which are soft, sweet and floral when picked, then bottled at 80 proof (40 percent alcohol) to create a softer, smoother after-dinner digestive.”

“Clear and brilliant with spicy, grappa-like aroma and rich, spicy vanilla-pepper notes.”   92

“Aromas of cucumber, apple, dill, cactus, and flowers lead to a firm and spicy palate with notes of apple, pepper, light vanilla, and lemon; finishes a little hot. After-dinner drink. A spirit that would be best served straight up.”
