Spargolo, Super Tuscan 2001

"Very ripe Sangiovese fruit..."   * * * * (Fine)
- Michael Lonsford - The Houston Chronicle - 21 March 2007

"This Sangiovese was rich and intense, with black cherries, wood and floral notes. Well-balanced with a long finish."
- Frank and Kate Sutherland - Journal and Courier - 14 June 2006

“100% Sangiovese, Spargolo from 2001 is remarkably earthy, viny, even flowery. Aged in French oak for 14 months and 6 months in bottle before release, this nimble IGT offers bushels of chewy drinking pleasure.”   Above Average/Recommended
- F. Paul Pacult - Spirit Journal - June 2006

"A Super Tuscan made in the heart of the Chianti Classico district, Cecchi's Spargolo is unusual for the genre. It's 100 percent Sangiovese, whereas most of the Super Tuscans in the neighborhood are typically made from some combination of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese. That said, Spargolo is nothing like a Chianti. The ripeness of fruit, richness and power on the palate and distinct black fruit characteristics are unusual for Sangiovese, to say the least. What it does possess that is common to the Chianti made in the region is superfine tannins, which make this wine enjoyable even in its youth."   91
- Robert Whitley - Torrance (CA) Daily Breeze - 26 May 2006

“The 2001 Spargolo is the most successful effort in the succeeding two decades, a full and brilliant ruby-garnet in color, expansive, spicy, and ripe on the nose with much focused red currant fruit. Forceful and voluminous on the palate, the fine depth and definition suggest another decade of pleasurable drinking ahead.”   91
- Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate - 24 April 2006

“Dark and very rich on the nose, with chocolate, berry and currant.  Full-bodied, with very velvety tannins and a long, long finish.  Big and rich.  Sangiovese from the Spargolo vineyard.  Impressive. Best after 2006.”   92
- Wine Spectator - 15 October 2004

“One hundred percent Sangiovese that smells of parchment and crushed violets in your yearbook and tastes of dried cherries, tobacco leaf and black tea.  It begs for thick pasta like papardelle.”  Recommended   * * *

Spargolo, Super Tuscan 2000

“Full bodied, intense, concentrated, and elegant with ripe and dried black cherry, plum, vanilla, dark chocolate, toasted oak, and earthy spice; long finish.  Veal chop with sun-dried tomatoes and black olives.” Serve now, but will hold for some time.
- Santé - Holiday 2004

“Very pretty on the nose, wit warm plum, vanilla and mint aromas.  The palate is hearty and lively, arguably a bit acidic, but still very nice.  Look for flavors of cherry, red plum and light, balanced oak.  The mouthfeel is good and the finish is smooth.  Overall, it’s a winner.”   89
- Wine Enthusiast - October 2004

"This super Tuscan wine, made entirely of Sangiovese grapes, has elegant cherry flavors, violet aromas and great balance. A nice match to grilled game."
- Tom Marquardt and Patrick Darr - The Capital (MD) - 6 June 2004

“A word of warning about the wine – it very much benefits from being chugged from bottle to jug and back again a couple of times before serving or, if you have more time and the situation warrants it (i.e. is fancy enough) decant it into your heirloom decanter before serving.  On the nose there are violets, which don’t show when the bottle is first opened, to go with the cherry fruit and gentle vanilla woodiness.  On the palate the wine shows its youth and its Sangiovese-ness with dry cherry flavours and tannins that are tough today but over the years will soften and merge with the fruit to give a classic wine.”   * * * going to * * * *
- Malcolm Anderson - Gazette (Quebec) - 5 June 2004

"A pretty and fruity red, with lovely berry and cherry character.  Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a caressing finish.  Delicate.  Sangiovese.  Best after 2006." 87
- Wine Spectator - 15 October 2003

Spargolo, Super Tuscan 1999

"...Spargolo is made from 100 percent Sangiovese, the indigenous red wine grape of Tuscany.  Spargolo is aged over a year in French oak barrels then transferred to larger casks for an additional year of barrel aging.  It is then bottled and aged for another 9 months before it is offered for sale.  All this attention to detail resulted in the 1999 Spargolo having an eye-appealing black cherry color and enticing toasted oak and raisin-like aroma.  Its supple texture gives the wine a refinement that makes the slight licorice and rosehip-like flavor delightful.  The 1999 Spargolo is enjoyable with 15 minutes aeration in the glass and has the structure to age and develop greater complexity throughout this decade.  At approximately $35 a bottle, this wine offers great value in comparison to other super-Tuscans."
- John Foy - Lifestyles - August 2003

"a "Sangiovese di Toscana" that registers a coolness of minerals and the warmth of dried herbs, the coolness of oak and the warmth of ripe red berry fruit. A bit tightly wound, it could use five or six years. "
- Fredric Koeppel - THE COMMERCIAL APPEAL

"Scents of roasted chestnuts carry through this wine, warm and pleasingly bitter in an old-fashioned style. Place it with a stewed pheasant, or gamier birds. "   86
- Wine Spectator - October 2002

"A pleasant red, with coffee, coconut and berry character. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins."   85
- Wine Spectator - October 2002

Spargolo, Super Tuscan 1998

"This is a beautiful 100 percent Sangiovese wine, with explosive aromas of cranberries, blackberries, tobacco, exotic spices and light mocha on the nose. The flavors are similarly rich and sensuous, with blackberry and black cherry flavors highlighted by exotic spices and a light touch of smoke. The meaty, jammy textures are intoxicating."
- Dick Rosano - FRA NOI January 2003

"Bright ruby red with an aroma of cedar, blackcurrant, oak, roasted meat and oregano. Medium-full with very good concentration. Rich finish with big fruit... impressive in its complexities."   ***
- Tom Hyland's Guide to Italian Wines - October/November 2002

"Pale garnet. Spice and cedar aromas. Full, warm and nicely balanced, with nuances of mocha and nutmeg. Finishes with firm but round tannins, and a note of bittersweet chocolate."   89
- Ed Beltrami - International Wine Cellar - January/February 2002

"A fresh and fruity Sangiovese, with berry and light smoke character. Medium-bodied, with light tannins and a fresh finish."   85
- Wine Spectator - November 2001

Spargolo, Super Tuscan 1997

"This generous red is filled with cool, cherry fruit. That fruit persists from beginning to end, lifted by firm acidity, burled by oak tannins and sharpened by ripe and tarry grape tannins. It's not earthy, but it's bold, firm, tightly built. Cellar it for six to eight years from the vintage."   91
- Wine & Spirits - April 2001

"Bright ruby hue. Pure ripe cherry and red fruit aromas. Moderately full-bodied. Firm and concentrated with tougher tannins and focused Sangiovese fruit flavors."   85-89
- Tastings (Journal of the Beverage Testing Institute) - Winter Issue

Spargolo, Super Tuscan 1995
