Stonehaven Winemaker's Selection Shiraz 2003 " 'Looks inviting' with dark, rich, garnet-purple hues, said one panelist. Scorers were intrigued by the 'nice herbaceous aromas' that mingled with cinnamon, eucalyptus and fresh picked blackberries. The medium-bodied flavors offered up 'Pleasant fruit' notes of jammy blackberries, black cherry and prunes, with sharp tannins adding tension to the generous finish. Food Friendliness: Game time! No, not football; this wine would pair beautifully with rosemary lamb chops or a grilled venison loin."
“This wine brings it all together; a pinch of tobacco, a dash of leather, generous helpings of exotic spice and a soft, mellow, black-cherry fruit flavor. Tannins are moderate, and there’s even a bit of chocolate in the finish. Another anytime wine.”
“Shows some roasted fruit character, with predominantly earthy flavors and notes of cooked meat, coffee, cinnamon and brown sugar. Low acidity and decent concentration give it a fat mouthfeel.” 85
“. . .a miracle in a bottle given its price. The pick of the quarter. A big mouthful of plummy, jammy wine with a huge hit of black pepper aroma and just enough alcohol bite to make it a delicious addition to any slow-cooked meat. We had it with lamb shanks, and it made magic.”
“Smooth and spicy, generous with its cherry and licorice flavors, weaving a spicy oak note through the finish. Drink now through 2008.” 87
“Spicy aromas of white pepper, clove, maple and cherry. Pungent cherry flavors with notes of minerals, oak and tobacco. Crisp close.” 86
“Here's a cooler climate shiraz from South Australia's Limestone Coast with bright blueberry and pepper aromas and moderately concentrated currant and cherry fruit finishing crisp and spicy.” * * *
“Very nice plum and currant flavors, along with an attractive pepper-spice combo that would match it with grilled meats--or rare lamb.” ****
