Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2003

"It's all Sangiovese, rich, ripe and elegant, with excellent balance."

- Michael Lonsford - The Houston Chronicle - 21 March 2007

Just when you thought you knew about Sangiovese - it's the primary grape of Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano - along comes yet another Tuscan name for it. When Sangiovese grows in the town of Scansano in the Maremma it takes the name Morellino, or “little cherry.” It's a name to remember since the area has just been elevated to DOCG from DOC. The 2003 Val delle Rose is very ripe and dense with distant hints of tobacco. Its round plushness makes it a good choice for drinking now with a hearty pasta dish.   89

- Michael Franz - 2005 Critics Challenge International Wine Competition - 28-29 May 2005

- Wine Spectator - 31 October 2004

Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 2000

|“Jammy and high strung, with nice red-fruit aromas and even more zesty raspberry on the palate.  Finishes chunky and fleshy, but without a ton of acidity.  Flavors of cola, coffee and mocha are the end touches.”   87
- Wine Enthusiast - 15 November 2004

“This 100-percent Sangiovese offers the flavor of dried fruits, particularly dried cherries alongside tough tannins.  It’s a rustic red for stew.”
- Wine & Spirits - October 2004

“This wine was 100% Sangiovese. It had an aroma of dark cherries and earth, with hints of vanilla. It had a medium body that would stand up well to red meat or game.”
- Frank Sutherland – Tennessean - 15 September 2004

“. . . tastes even richer. It has supple tannins, a long, satisfying finish, and unmistakable Italian flair.”
- Paul Lukacs - The Washington Times - 4 August 2004

“Medium to full bodied with soft mouth-feel and excellent fruit expression of black cherry, nutmeg, and some blackberry; balanced finish.  Veal chop.  Fully mature, serve now.”
- Santé - July/August 2004

"100 percent Sangiovese: fruity, intense color, delicious nose.  Bigger and bolder than the Chianti.  I’ll serve this with a steak from the grill.  Ready to drink and will hold for up to five years, I think.  Good price; I’ll be putting some of this in the cellar for this summer."
- Bill Van Ollefen - Greenwich (CT) Times - 14 April 2004

"Spicy and peppery, with lots of wild fruit, Alicante-style.  Full-bodied, rich and wonderful.  Long finish.  Delicious and fun.  Drink now."  88
- Wine Spectator - 31 October 2003

"Striking currant and raspberry aromas.  Very dense and sweet on the palate, with luscious plum, tobacco and anise flavors enlivened by brisk acidity.  Finishes with mouthcoating, caressing tannins and spicy wood accents.  A delicious, classy wine, notable for its lovely balance and persistence."  92
- Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar - July/August 2003

Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 1999

"Dry, full-bodied , medium tannin, high acidity.  Drink now -10 years.  Dry cherry flavors share the stage with Levantine notes like pomegranate, rose, and spice."   ***
- Jamal Rayyis - Food And Wine Magazine Wine Guide 2004

“The dark ruby color leads to aromas of cassis, mushrooms and spicy oak and then chewy fruit flavors of ripe cherries and plums with oak accents framed by firm, muscular tannins.”   Recommended
- Dave DeSimone - Tribune Review ( Greensburg, PA) - 5 November 2003

“This is first class mega value for money, seriously quaffable vino.  The Val delle Rose winery is a master at producing splendiferous wines from the Sangiovese grape in Tuscany.  When in doubt about Italian wines, the name Cecchi on the label should instill confidence.  I’ve yet to drink a Cecchi I didn’t enjoy.  This particular wine is part of Cecchi’s portfolio which finds its way to the shelves in our neck of the woods.  A very intense ruby red color wine with a ripe fruity bouquet and a cherry and peppery flavor.  It does really well with 10 minutes of fridge time, which for me is the wine equivalent of slipping into something more comfortable before we settle down together for an enjoyable evening.”
- Phillip Silverstone - Observer (PA Beverage Journal) - 1 October 2003

"Dark ruby with a garnet core.  Deep aromas of plum and dark cherry.  Intense, almost jammy dark fruit flavors.  The wine's full tannic thrust is only partly buffered by an overlay of rich fruit. Closes with earth and mineral sensations."  87
- Stephen Tanzer - International Wine Cellar - July/August 2003

"This is the big brother of the earlier wine, richer and brawnier than the first. The aromas of toast and oak wrap around succulent fruit, the mouthfeel is puckery and dry, almost salty, with flavors of black cherry, raspberry, roasted nuts, tobacco, chocolate and a touch of anise."
- Dick Rosano - FRA NOI January 2003

"Deep garnet-bright ruby red with an aroma of cherry, plum, allspice, oregano and oak. Medium-full with very good concentration. Rich, well-structured finish with very good length and lively tart acidity and sleek tannins. Not that much bigger than the regular Morellino, but more mid-palate and a longer finish."   ****
- Wine Spectator - October/November 2002

"Rich and exotic, with plum and mineral aromas and hints of dried herbs. Medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a fruity finish."   87
- Wine Spectator - October 2002

Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 1998

"...is simply stunning, with layers of rich flavors and amazing suaveness for a young wine. "
- Michael Apstein - Boston Globe - October 2002

"Some cool earth, leather and smoked meat aromas get this ripe, full-bodied Sangiovese going. The palate is fairly soft, a reminder of blackberry pie. And there's plenty of unmistakable milk chocolate, too. Look at it as a tamed, rich, enjoyable red..."   88
- Wine Enthusiast - August 2002

"Delicious, but has lots of new wood, with tobacco, berry and vanilla aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied, with fine tannins and a very woody, vanilla aftertaste."   86
- Wine Spectator - November 2001

Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 1997

"Succulent fruit and spices. Full-bodied, ideal with lamb. Made with Sangiovese grapes, this 1997 has intense aromas of blackberries, black cherries and chocolate. Its mouth is full of seductive red fruit, some spice, firm tannin and high acidity."   4/4 - Decanter Award
- Decanter.com - June 2001

"From the hills of southern Tuscany, south of Siena, comes this all-Sangiovese red, with a finely etched aroma of dried cherries and fresh tomato, a silky/tart entry of plums, and a crisp finish perfect for tomato-y dishes."
- Dan Berger's Vintage Notes - April 2001

"Dark berry fruit holds its own against the tough, gruff tannins of this wine, saturating the mouth with a clean, savory flavor. Cellar this for a few years to mollify those tannins, or enjoy it now with a rich, meaty dish such as a steak and kidney pie."   88
- Wine & Spirits - October 2000

"The 1997 Riserva is full, soft and complex wine, with rich fruitiness and evident new oak character. Long finish."   *****
- Restaurant Wine - July/August 2000

Val delle Rose Morellino di Scansano Riserva 1996

"Deep, saturated ruby-garnet hue. Generous spice, mineral, and game aromas show a hefty wood accent."
- Tastings (Journal of the Beverage Testing Institute) - July 2000

"Morellino is a remote district in northern Tuscany and the main grape it grows is Sangiovese. This wine has a lovely core of juicy, fruit-laced complexity, a lighter weight wine with medium body and persistent flavors of cherry, rose petals and a trace of sandalwood. A lovely evocation of the grape at a fair price."
- Dan Berger's Vintage Experiences - February 2000

" Mature black cherry, some dried fruit smells and earthy notes. Medium-bodied, with soft, ripe cherry fruit flavors and good balancing acidity; pleasing finish, with drying tannins."
- Santé - June 2000
